At least 13 people killed and 98 wounded in train derailment in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” declared the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a central development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands immediate answers."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
